Common questions

Before you call

How long does it take to build a deck in Canberra?

Most standard deck builds run two to three weeks on site, depending on size, levels, and substructure. Twelve to forty square metres is the typical range. Larger architectural builds with multiple levels or heavy structural work can run four to six weeks. We give you a fixed start and finish date in writing before the build begins.

What’s the best timber for a deck in Canberra?

Spotted gum and merbau are the two strongest performers in the Canberra climate. Spotted gum is the harder, lighter-coloured option with a tighter grain (good if you want a paler finish). Merbau is darker, slightly softer, and warmer in tone (the wet warm look you’ll see in our gallery). Both handle frost, summer heat, and twenty-plus years of foot traffic if oil-finished and re-oiled annually. We’ll talk through the trade-offs at the site visit.

How much does a pergola cost in Canberra?

Most standard pergolas (twelve to twenty-five square metres) run five to eighteen thousand depending on roofing material, posts, and integration with the home. Colorbond roofing comes in cheaper than polycarbonate. Wired-in lighting and fans add a couple of thousand on top. Free site visit, fixed written quote, line items spelled out.

Can you restore an older deck instead of replacing it?

Yes, and most of the time we’d recommend it first. Restoration (sand-back, board replacement where rot has set in, structural check, oil-finish) is forty to seventy percent cheaper than a full replacement and adds another fifteen to twenty years of life. If the substructure has gone, we’ll tell you that and you’ll know it’s a replacement job. If the boards just need a refresh, that’s what the report says.

Do I need council approval for a deck or pergola in the ACT?

Most decks and pergolas under specific size, height, and setback thresholds in the ACT are exempt development and don’t need DA approval. Above those thresholds (typically anything attached to the home, over 25m², or above floor height) you’ll need approval. We’ll tell you which side of the line your project sits on at the free site visit and handle the application paperwork if needed.

What’s the warranty on a new deck?

Five-year workmanship warranty in writing on every carpentry build. Materials carry the timber and fixings supplier warranties separately. Annual deck maintenance (inspection and re-oil) bundled at a discount if you want us to keep it on the books.

Can you build before Christmas?

If you’re asking in August or September, almost always yes. October is usually the cut-off for new builds finishing before Christmas. November onwards we can usually fit a restoration or a pergola roof replacement before the holidays, but full new builds are scheduled into the new year. The earlier you book, the better your odds.
